A person has been flown to hospital with critical injuries after a hunting incident on a Hauraki Gulf island overnight.

One helicopter was dispatched to Kawau Island and a person choppered to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition, Hato Hone St John said.

Waitematā CIB Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie said emergency services were notified of an injured person on the island at 12.50am, with reports indicating that a firearm had been discharged in bushland near Schoolhouse Bay Rd.

“One person was transported to hospital in a critical condition.”

A 44-year-old man was charged with careless use of a firearm and was due to appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow.

“WorkSafe has been advised,” Goldie said.

A spokesperson for the regulator confirmed Worksafe had been notified of the incident.

“Our inspectors are making initial enquiries to understand the circumstances,” they said.
