Neighbour hears 'bump' as pedestrian fatally run over on Auckland street

An East Auckland resident has recalled a loud “bump” and rushing on to Pakūranga Rd after a pedestrian was run over.

Police confirmed a person died after being hit by a car on Pakūranga Rd in Pakūranga Heights last night.

A resident told the Herald her daughter heard a “bump” before they rushed outside.

The woman, who did not want to be named, saw people near a bus stop and a large emergency services presence, but did not know what had happened until today.

The resident saw a backpack on the road, but did not know whose it was.

Other residents were shocked the “horrible” incident happened metres from their homes.

Late this morning the road had been cleared, with brightly coloured crash markings remaining.

The commenter rushed outside after hearing the accident. She said the busy road had a history of crashes and close calls during the 20 years she had lived there.

Most recently, her brick fence was smashed into by a vehicle in July.

Others nearby told the Herald the road was very busy and “dangerous”, and pedestrians often tried to run across.

Emergency services were called at 9.05pm on Monday, police said this morning.

“Sadly, despite best efforts, the pedestrian died at the scene.”

A black Honda was spotted about 100m up the road from the pedestrian.

A Herald photographer at the scene said Pakūranga Rd was closed between Cascades Rd and Bells Rd. About 10 police vehicles were at the intersection of the two roads.

The photographer said police spoke to a man in the rear of a police car before removing, searching and handcuffing him. Police took him from the scene.

This afternoon, police said the investigation was in its early stages.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene last night.

Photos from the scene last night show police markers across the road near a bus stop, and a black car was parked nearby with a smashed front window.
