Residents wake to huge tree falling onto parked cars and blocking Remuera road

A large tree in Remuera cracked at the base in the early hours of this morning, with one local describing it as a “very abrupt wake-up”. 

Lower Portland Rd is now blocked as arborists work to clear the tree that has fallen across a creek and street. 

Deputy mayor Desley Simpson, who lives in the area, has advised the street is “fully blocked” from Scherff Rd to Shore Rd. 

“Treescape people working their hardest to get it sorted but please use Ingram or Aldred to access Victoria Ave to get to Shore Rd.” 

Auckland Transport (AT) issued a notice on its mobile app advising bus routes 755 and 515 were still running but would detour through neighbouring streets. 

A local, who wished to stay anonymous, told the Herald the tree was on a reserve at the lower end of the street, but cracked at its base and fell around 3am. 

Another resident described the fall as “so loud” and said four police officers showed up after a call from a concerned neighbour.

The police and Auckland Council have been approached for comment.
