Auckland schoolgirl hit by falling signpost after bus collides with pole

An Auckland schoolgirl is injured after being hit by a falling signpost following a bus collision with a pole. 

The girl was on a footpath on Main Highway, Ellerslie Village when a bus collided with a pole, causing it to fall on her, police said. 

Emergency services were sent just before 8am to reports a bus had collided with a pole. 

“A pole has also fallen onto a girl who was on the footpath. 

“She has been reported as being in a moderate condition,” said a police spokesperson. 

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a motor vehicle incident at Main Highway, Ellerslie at 7.52am today and responded with one ambulance and one operations manager. 

“One patient was assessed and treated at the scene by the ambulance crew (minor condition and did not require transportation to hospital).” 

An Auckland schoolgirl has been hit by a falling sign after the pole was first hit by a bus. 

In a photo posted to social media the girl could be seen lying on the ground while a group of students in uniform and a couple of adults surround her. 

A local school has been contacted for comment. 

In 2024, a pedestrian was killed after a taxi driver, who had worked 30-hours in two days and was fatigued, reversed into a sign which fell on him. 

The victim, Jason McEwan, was out walking his dog when he was hit by the sign and died at the scene.
