Vandalism to fibre cables in Swanson and Massey has left thousands of customers without internet.

A spokesperson for Chorus confirmed they were responding to an ongoing outage in the region caused by vandalism to network cables.

The outage appears to have first been reported early this morning.

More than 3100 customers were originally impacted by the issue, with some being reconnected throughout today.

The spokesperson said Chorus’ current assessment is that the majority of impacted services will be restored by tomorrow morning.

Crews will be working through the night to get the network back up and running.

“Restoring fibre services is a highly technical process that involves carefully repairing and splicing individual fibre connections”, the spokesperson said.

Services will be restored progressively, with vulnerable customers and critical services prioritised.

“We appreciate customers’ patience and understanding while we work to complete repairs as soon as we can.”

The outage comes as the Warriors face the Dolphins tonight in the NRL qualifying finals.

One customer told the Herald she would be watching tonight’s game using her phone data.
