Two pupils are in Auckland’s Starship Hospital with moderate injuries after they were hit in separate crashes on their way to school on the first full week of term.

A Whangaparāoa College pupil was hit by a car at 8.15am while trying to cross Whangaparāoa Rd, near an intersection Karepiro Drive.

A police spokesperson said they received reports of the crash at 8.18 am.

“An intermediate-aged child suffered moderate injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.”

Whangaparāoa College principal Steve McCracken confirmed the “student was taken to Starship [hospital] in an ambulance with mum next to them”.

Local resident Livy Gledhill heard multiple sounds of sirens and said the spot where it happened was a recipe for disaster.

Gledhill said she’s waited for something to happen at the location, as it doesn’t have a pedestrian crossing.

“So many people have to run [across the road] no matter what especially the kids... it was scary over the holidays watching all the young ones while parents are at work.

“You also have primary kids using that spot for crossing in the morning and afternoons. “

Gledhill’s daughter had just started attending Whangaparāoa College and said her “heart goes out to all those affected in the community”.

She believed the area would benefit from traffic lights.

Police confirmed they then received reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car on Onewa Rd at 8.26am.

“An intermediate-aged child suffered moderate injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.”

St John sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

“One patient was assessed by the crew at the scene and transported to Starship Hospital by ambulance in a moderate condition.”

It was unclear which school the student attended, however St Mary’s School principal Paul Coakley said he believed they were from Northcote College.

Coakley said he saw “multiple fire, ambulance and police rush past”.

Northcote College has been approached for comment.
