The AI trend quietly reshaping employer-employee relationships
Artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping employer-employee relationships as staff increasingly turn to technology for workplace issues before communication with managers, warns an employment expert.
Peninsula New Zealand director of operations Ashlea Maley said employees were using artificial intelligence (AI) to understand workplace rights, assess employer decisions and seek guidance.
However, while AI can provide quick access to information, workplace issues often involve complex legal and practical considerations that require context, judgment and an understanding of New Zealand’s employment framework.
“Many organisations have begun developing policies around how employees use AI at work. Fewer have considered what happens when employees begin using AI as an informal adviser in workplace situations,” Maley said.
She said that while much of the conversation around AI has focused on productivity and whether technology will replace jobs, this was the most immediate workplace change already happening.
“Today, every employee has access to information at a scale and speed we haven’t seen before.
“AI can provide instant responses to complex workplace questions, but it doesn’t always understand the context, workplace culture or specific employment arrangements involved.
For employers, Maley said this reinforces the importance of clear communication, transparency and consistency in workplace decision-making.
“Business owners should assume employees are researching workplace issues independently and may be arriving at conversations with information generated by AI tools.”
She said it would be up to workplace leadership, communication and people-management practices to evolve at the same pace people were using AI.
“The organisations that will navigate this shift most successfully won’t necessarily be those investing the most in AI technology. They’ll be the ones investing in strong workplace relationships, effective communication and capable people leadership,” she said.
“Good workplace relations have always mattered. In an AI-enabled workplace, they matter more than ever.”
Recent figures from Datacom’s annual AI Index survey found uptake across New Zealand businesses has reached 91%.
