Jahkani Hamilton was found dead on Ngapipito Rd around 11pm on May 5.

Far North Police say they are being met with a wall of silence nearly two months on from a hit-and-run that killed an 18-year-old dirt bike rider.

Jahkani Hamilton was found dead on Ngapipito Rd about 11.10pm, between Kaikohe and Moerewa, late on May 5.

Police say an associate of his was found seriously injured nearby, having also been knocked off a dirt bike.

Hamilton’s death is the focus of a police investigation named Operation Concert.

Far North area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Christan Fouhy criticised what he described as a “wall of silence” almost two months on.

“Witnesses and their supporters are choosing to say nothing, actively resisting the investigation into the events leading up to a young person’s death.”

Fouhy said the silence was hugely frustrating for investigators seeking answers for Hamilton’s grieving whānau.

The police investigation is “being hindered”.

“There are people within the Mid North community that know exactly what’s gone on here, and they are choosing to remain silent,” Fouhy said.

“No matter what’s happened, a young person has lost their life and people need to start talking.”

Fouhy said misleading police or concealing evidence were criminal offences and people could be prosecuted.

Police told media on the day after the fatal hit-and-run that they believed both riders had been knocked off their bikes.

“Our investigation won’t be going away,” Fouhy said.

“Police are committed to finding answers for Jahkani’s whānau, and I acknowledge the patience they have shown in this investigation.”

Fouhy said anyone with information should contact police by calling 105 and quoting file number 260506/1270.

Information can be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
