A 58-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murders of two men.

Rodney Stewart Smith, a forklift operator, is accused of murdering former Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club president Glen Tukaki and Nigel Robinson.

Smith made an appearance at Christchurch District Court via audio visual link from prison this morning.

Judge Tony Zohrab remanded him in custody without plea to appear in the High Court on October 29.

Tributes have flowed for Glen “Lizard” Tukaki, who died at the Phillipstown social housing complex early on Saturday.

Police were called to the complex about 12.50am. Two other people were seriously injured.

Facebook tributes remembered Tukaki as a colourful character with a caring side.

“One of a kind who was a kind, caring fulla deep down,” one person wrote.

Another recalled his generosity, saying he had “the biggest heart”, while a friend remembered him as someone who was “never short on offering a helping hand”.

“My brother, my president, see you over there some day,” another wrote.

Another remembered Tukaki as a “hard man” who rarely smiled.

“When you did, it was a shock,” he wrote. “But you did me no harm. I had a lot of good nights at the club with you. I will never forget you.”

His “little sister” Jayne Tukaki wrote: “Rest easy, Glen, love you always.”

Robinson, also known as “Rooster” and “Big Red”, was remembered as a generous man who lived life on his own terms.

Nigel "Rooster" Robinson, also known as "Big Red", has been remembered by loved ones as a generous and fiercely loyal man.

One person described him as having “one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever known”.

“The type of person who would give his last dollar if he had it, even if it meant going without himself,” they wrote on Facebook.

“You lived a colourful life, that’s for sure ... You were one of those people who left an impression without even trying.”
