A 63-year-old man has been charged with a raft of sexual offending as police investigate mass abuse allegations.

He appeared in the Christchurch District Court this week charged with four counts of unlawful sexual connection with a male aged 12 to 16 and three counts of indecent assault on a boy aged between 12 and 16.

Detective Inspector Scott Anderson confirmed that the man had been arrested “in relation to alleged historical sexual offending”.

The accused has been granted interim suppression, which covers his name and occupation.

He is expected to appear in court again next month.

Anderson told the Herald that police could not comment further while the matter was before the court.

In New Zealand, police will launch a mass allegation investigation when accusations of serious abuse are made involving four or more complainants by the same alleged offender.
