Two people are dead and another person taken to hospital after a boat capsized off the Manawatū coast this morning.

Emergency services were first called to the scene, near the mouth of the Tangimoana River about 8.35am after a report of a capsized boat.

“Sadly, two people died, while another sustained injuries and has been taken to hospital,” said Manawatū Area Commander Inspector Matenga Gray.

Coastguard’s National Operations Centre said three people were tipped into the water when a craft overturned on the Rangitīkei River bar at Tangimoana.

The centre was alerted to the incident just after 8am. Volunteers from Coastguard Manawatū responded with their jetski Blue Rescue and rescue vessel Kevin Morris II to reports that three people were in trouble.

One person involved in the capsize has been taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

Police confirmed officers were responding to the “water incident” at Tangimoana Beach, an isolated coastal settlement about 15km southwest of Bulls, after initially receiving reports about 8.35am.

“Police are currently in attendance at an incident involving a capsized boat at Tangimoana Beach, Manawatū,” a spokesperson said.

“Emergency services are on scene and more information will be provided when available.”

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a water incident at Tangimoana Beach Rd at 8.14am.

“One patient has been transported to Palmerston North Hospital in a moderate condition,” a spokesperson said.
