A large explosion caused by the destruction of a marine marker has rocked an island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf.

The explosion on Browns Island happened off the city’s eastern shoreline about 12.30pm.

A white puff of smoke could be seen filtering into the air.

A New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) spokesperson said their Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called by police after an “item of concern” was discovered.

“The item was investigated and determined to be a marine marker, which was disposed of in a safe manner,” the spokesperson said.

“Anyone who discovers a potentially dangerous item should always exercise caution until the item is deemed safe by an expert.

“If you do discover something that might be dangerous, remain clear of the item and contact New Zealand Police as soon as possible.

People took to social media after hearing the explosion.

One person said the explosion could be heard 8km away in Howick, while another heard it inside their home kilometres away.

“We heard it inside our house with doors closed in Half Moon Bay,” one person wrote.

Another person described a “massive” ball of black smoke entering the air.
