A man has been taken into custody after four people were injured in a serious assault in Hamilton.

Police said emergency services responded to reports of an assault on Churchill Ave around 8.55pm.

“One person has critical injuries,” Sergeant Luke Thompson said.

“One person has serious injuries, and two other people are injured.

“They have now been transported to hospital with suspected knife wounds.”

Thompson said one of the victims fled the scene on foot, seeking help at a nearby residence.

“It is alleged that a firearm was discharged by an occupant at that property, without causing injury.”

Police arrived shortly afterwards, arresting a 23-year-old man who will be facing charges related to the incident.

There is not believed to be anyone else involved.

“We acknowledge that this will have been disruptive and frightening for people in the area and we reassure the public that we do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety,” Thompson said.

“There are scene guards, cordons and an increased police presence in the area while we work to understand the circumstances of the incident.

“An update will be provided proactively as more information comes to hand.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 105 online or by phone, referencing file number PO67322399.

“Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
