‘Loud and rumbly’: Sharp quake rattles Bay of Plenty
An earthquake has rattled the Bay of Plenty this evening.
The magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 6.25pm, about 15km west of Whakatāne, at a depth of 5km. The earthquake details are preliminary.
GeoNet listed the shaking as light, with more than 1700 people reporting they had felt the quake within minutes.
Bay of Plenty Civil Defence warned residents to be prepared for possible aftershocks, urging people to “Drop, Cover, and Hold” if they felt further shaking.
People across the Bay of Plenty reported a sharp jolt, with windows rattling and household items moving.
In Edgecumbe, one person described a “strong shake” and said their entertainment unit moved.
A Pyes Pā resident said their couch shook and the movement “went for a little while”, while people in Tāneatua and Manawahe reported items wobbling and windows rattling.
One person said they heard the earthquake before feeling it: “Heard it before it hit. Loud and rumbly.”
Another described the shaking as “pretty hard and noisy”, while one person said even their dog was frightened.
