A major power cut has hit Auckland’s North Shore Hospital with procedures canned and back-up generators used to keep life-saving medical equipment working.

According to the Vector Electricity outage map, the loss of power to the hospital this morning was unplanned.

The blackout is limited to the block on the corner of Shakespeare and Taharoto Rds, near Lake Pupuke.

Dorothea Russell told the Herald she was waiting for a procedure at the hospital at 9am when the power went out 20 minutes later.

She said she understood the lifts in the building had stopped working.

She warned people heading to North Shore Hospital to delay their trip if it was not essential because of the outage.

The power was cut to the “whole main building”.

Back-up generators have kicked in for essential treatment with staff ensuring critical oxygen supplies to patients were working.

“Power still not back, there was a message over the loudspeaker with some info for the staff. The staff are doing amazingly, checking everyone, being calm,” Russell said.

Vector and Health NZ Te Whatu Ora have been approached for comment.
