Severe thunderstorm warning lifted but stormy conditions to persist

MetService has extended a severe thunderstorm warning for the Hastings district this afternoon, ahead of the soaring, sweltering temperatures expected over the coming days.

At 3pm, MetService’s weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Tutira, Te Pōhue and Waikoau.

MetService said these thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by “torrential rain and frequent lightning”.

“Torrential rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

“Frequent lightning is dangerous to people and livestock, especially those exposed outdoors or on the water, and can cause power surges and damage to electrical equipment”, MetService said.

The National Emergency Management Agency advised locals to take several measures to ensure their safety.

Locals are advised to take shelter, preferably indoors, away from windows and avoid sheltering under trees.

The warning is valid until 4pm.

Sweaty temperatures on the way

This wild weather comes as heat alerts are expected to come into force later this week, with temperatures set to soar in both islands.

MetService meteorologist Silvia Martino said afternoon temperatures were set to climb into the high 20s on Thursday, with some places in Wairarapa and Canterbury potentially cracking 30C – 6-7C above average for this time of year.

“It could get uncomfortably hot later in the week, with several spots in the lower North Island set to approach or exceed their heat alert thresholds and overnight temperatures in the high teens not allowing time for recovery,” Martino said.

Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne may see a “lightning spark or two up in the ranges” as the heat clashes with an odd shower, Martino said.
