One person has died after a three-vehicle crash on the Waikato Expressway this evening.

Counties Manukau Police confirmed they went to the crash near Pōkeno just before 7pm.

“One person died at the scene, two other people were injured, one critically and one moderately,” a spokesperson said.

Hato Hone St John said three ambulances, two operations managers, a rapid response unit and a helicopter were sent to the crash site, though they did not immediately confirm how many patients were being treated.

NZTA said SH1 southbound lanes remain blocked between Great South Rd and Pioneer Rd.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
