Driver allegedly steals good Samaritan's car after crash, hits four vehicles

Police are investigating two separate crashes in South Auckland - the second happening after a driver involved in the initial incident allegedly stole a good Samaritan’s car and fled the scene.

At 6.40pm on Friday police were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Patumāhoe Road, Patumāhoe.

“Following the crash, one of the drivers allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to a member of the public who had stopped to assist at the scene,” Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson.

“The vehicle was then driven back towards the crash scene, and members of the public and attending police staff, were forced to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

“The driver then collided with four vehicles, including a police car.“

One member of the public suffered moderate injuries when their vehicle was struck. They were rushed to hospital.

“The alleged offender became trapped in the stolen vehicle following the collisions and is in Auckland Hospital in a serious condition,” McPherson said.

“It is incredibly fortunate that nobody else was seriously injured.

“We could very easily have been dealing with a tragedy.“

McPherson said support was being provided to those affected, including staff involved in the incident.

The road was closed while the police Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination, but has since reopened.

McPherson said an investigation into the incident was underway.
