Police are responding to a Wiri youth justice facility where a group have reportedly climbed on to the roof.
About 11.05am, police were called to support Oranga Tamariki (OT) at a Kiwi Tamaki Rd address.
The report indicated that several young people were standing on the rooftop of the Korowai Manaaki Rangatahi youth justice residence.
Officers are still on the scene working to retrieve the youths from the rooftop.
“Oranga Tamariki can confirm we are responding to an incident at Korowai Manaaki, one of our Auckland youth justice residences,” the agency said in a statement.
“A number of young people have gained access to the roof within the facility.
“We are working with police to resolve this matter and can confirm there are no concerns for public safety. The young people are still within the confines of the facility.”
In July 2023, several young people refused to leave the same roof until Oranga Tamariki met several demands.
OT deputy chief executive Tusha Penny told the AM Show the situation had been resolved when food was brought in for the group after they came down.
“We did give them takeaways. So they got KFC and McDonald’s to come down. But like I said, we got them down safely after that period of time,” she said.
The group had remained on the roof for a total of 30 hours in a tense standoff with authorities.
More to come.
