An elderly man who died after a crash involving a cycle and a car in Lytton Rd on Saturday has been described as a “greatly loved member of the Gisborne parish Catholic community”.

Police today confirmed the cyclist was Terry Donovan, 85.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this incredibly hard time,” police said.

The Tairāwhiti Catholic Facebook page posted comments on his death.

“Terry was a greatly loved member of our parish community and we will miss him dearly. Rosary prayers will be recited for him on Thursday evening at 5.30pm, and his Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 12.10pm on Friday. Our sympathy to his family and his many friends.“

Other tributes for Donovan, who was a member of Wainui Lions Club for decades, included “one of the kindest souls around”, “a lovely person”, “a devoted Christian” and “a wonderful man”.

Police said inquiries into the crash were ongoing.
