About 655,000 Toyota Camrys recalled for display failure risk, including NZ

Toyota New Zealand is recalling 176 Camry vehicles after identifying a potential fault that could cause one of its displays to fail during start-up.

The recall affects certain New Zealand-new Toyota Camry vehicles manufactured between June 2024 and November 2025.

Toyota New Zealand said the issue relates to the combination meter, or instrument cluster display, and owners of affected vehicles will be contacted directly by letter.

The fix involves reprogramming the display software and will be carried out free of charge at Toyota dealerships. The work is expected to take about two hours.

The New Zealand recall forms part of a much larger global campaign announced by Toyota, which is recalling about 655,000 Camry vehicles worldwide.

The New Zealand announcement by Toyota provided minimal details, but according to documents filed with United States safety regulators, the fault can cause a 7-inch (18cm) display combination meter to go blank when the vehicle is started.

If that happens, safety-related indicators including turn signals, hazard lights and warning messages may not function correctly, AP reported.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the problem could also affect seatbelt reminders and “key left in ignition” alerts.

Regulators warned the display failure could increase crash risks because drivers may be unable to see important vehicle warnings, while other road users may not be able to recognise a driver’s intention to turn or signal a hazard.

More than 508,000 of the affected vehicles were sold in the US, where the recall covers 2025 and 2026 model-year Camry Hybrids, AP reported.

Toyota told AP the global recall affects vehicles sold in North America, the Middle East, Asia and other markets. The cars were produced between December 2023 and July 2026 at manufacturing plants in the US, Japan and Thailand.

In New Zealand, Toyota said the recall is a precautionary measure and urged owners to check whether their vehicle is affected through the company’s recall website.
