A large tree has come down at a playground in central Auckland.

However, a witness told the Herald there were no children around at the time.

Photos from the playground at Western Park in Ponsonby show the large tree snapped at its base and spread across the ground behind the twin-tunnel racing slide.

The tree came down just after 2pm, a man who sent the Herald photos said.

“It shook my house ... 45 minutes later and all the kids would’ve been out,” another man who lives nearby, Cameron Cruise, said, noting the nearby Auckland Girls’ Grammar and a creche and Freemans Bay Kindergarten on the other side of Western Park.

Auckland Council has been contacted for comment.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand couldn’t immediately be contacted.

Heavy rain fell across the top of the North Island over the weekend, including heavy downpours in Auckland.
