Foreign Minister makes his adviser Ambassador to Sweden
Foreign Minister Winston Peters has made his foreign affairs adviser the Ambassador to Sweden.
In his latest round of diplomatic appointments, Peters has made Dr Jon Johansson the Ambassador to Sweden.
Johansson acts as Peters’ foreign affairs adviser and often accompanies Peters on his formal overseas visits. Johansson is also frequently seen with Peters during his media engagements at Parliament.
Over his time in Parliament in this term and during the 2017-2020 term when New Zealand First was in government with Labour, Johansson acted as Peters’ chief of staff and then as a senior specialist adviser.

“In these roles, Jon provided advice to the Foreign Minister on a broad range of policy issues and participated in the Minister’s engagements with counterpart Foreign Ministers all around the world,” Peters’ statement read.
Johansson, a former Victoria University of Wellington lecturer and researcher, was described as a “proud Cantabrian by origin, and Wellingtonian by inclination”, with a “strong Scandinavian heritage”, with his father having emigrated to New Zealand from Denmark in the late 1940s.
