Michael Laws is expected to announce his candidacy for NZ First on Friday morning, ending weeks of speculation over whether the broadcaster will be campaigning to return to Parliament this year.

Laws’ announcement has been widely tipped and is expected to be made on The Platform tomorrow morning on Sean Plunket’s show.

Laws has been an MP before. He entered Parliament as a National MP in 1990. In 1996, he defected to NZ First.

In the intervening years, he has served on the Otago Regional Council and has broadcast on The Platform, the online broadcaster founded by Sean Plunket.

Laws is no stranger to controversy. He described former Governor-General Anand Satyanand as a “large, fat man” who has “never left” the buffet table.

NZ First Leader Winston Peters has been asked about the Laws speculation this week.

“Yesterday’s answer was that the party handles that, not me,” Peters said today.

Laws told the Herald he would not be on air tomorrow due to a pre-existing commitment.
