Former All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams is back home after being rushed to hospital for an infection which developed after neck surgery.

The 40-year-old updated fans on social media with a series of pictures and videos of him in the hospital and with his family.

“After two more surgeries & two weeks in hospital, I’m finally home. Alhamdullilah,” he captioned the post.

“Grateful for all the love.”

He showed himself posed in his hospital bed, and back home with what appeared to be an IV drip in his arm being fed by a bag he wore around his waist, alongside a video of him walking out of the hospital.

He also treated fans to some more gruesome pictures of his stitched wound, and after it had been bandaged.

In early June, Williams had posted a lengthy video to his Instagram followers before his fourth neck surgery, warning parents and their children about the reality of being a professional athlete.

“This is a reminder for young athletes and parents pushing them to pursue a career as a professional athlete,” Williams said at the time.

“Understand this is the reality sometimes of this sport that we love and that we play.”

He then shocked fans later in the month by announcing he had returned to hospital after complications with the previous surgery.

“A few days later, woke up in the morning, fever, spewing, pus coming out of my wound,” he explained.

“My wound got infected from the surgery, so I had to rush up to the hospital, went up to the emergency ward.”

He later updated fans with a comment on the same post where he reflected on how hard his return to hospital had hit him.

“The last few weeks have really slowed me down and I have been forced to reflect a lot but sometimes a slower pace is what the heart needs to connect and see what is really needed in life,” he wrote.
