Breakers bring in Kiwi coach Josiah Maama after Spurs stint
The Breakers have brought in another fresh face to their coaching staff.
New Zealander Josiah Maama has joined the Breakers after a stint with the San Antonio Spurs at the 2026 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and was part of the coaching team that helped New Zealand finish fourth at the Fiba U19 World Cup in 2025.
Maama, who’s from Glen Innes, also co-founded East Auckland’s GI Rise Basketball grassroots initiative, led Dilworth School to its first Auckland Premiership title in 2025 and was assistant coach for the Auckland Tuatara in the NZNBL.
The assistant coach said he has been a lifelong fan of the team.
“I used to watch games on TV and dream of being involved,” Maama said.
“Coaching is a vocation for me, and to be able to serve and be part of the legacy of this organisation is special to me, my family and Glen Innes.”

He said he hopes to mentor the next generation of basketball players coming through the club’s ranks.
The Breakers’ president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher said Maama is one of the best basketball minds in this part of the world.
“Adding Josiah to our coaching staff under Gordon Herbert is a huge coup for our club and for his own development as a Kiwi coach,” Boucher said.
Incoming coach Gordon Herbert said Maama is part of a team that can help him to connect with the local basketball culture.
“Josiah has recent experience inside an elite NBA organisation at the San Antonio Spurs and has shown great basketball acumen which will help us get the best from the roster,” Herbert said.
The Breakers have brought in plenty of new names for the upcoming NBL season, with Josiah-Jordan James recently filling one of the two remaining import spots.
Sebastian Gleim, who had previously worked with Herbert at the German national team, has joined as an assistant coach, while NBL championship duo Dejan Vasiljevic and Kouat Noi have been signed to the team this off-season, alongside shooter Preston Le Gassick.
