F1 fan uses Lawson support poster to insult Spanish PM
A Formula One supporter at the Spanish Grand Prix appeared to pose as a Liam Lawson fan to produce a sign insulting the nation’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
In the build-up to the race this morning, TV coverage focused on the fan initially holding a sign that read: “I travelled 19,854km to see Liam Lawson”. But it appeared to be a ruse to ensure he would be picked out by the cameras.
He quickly flipped the sign to reveal “Perro Sánchez hijo puta” [translated to “Pedro Sánchez son of a b***h”].
Sánchez, who has been Spanish Prime Minister since 2022, is facing intense political pressure ahead of next year’s general election over his handling of 70,000 migrants entering coast city Ceuta from Morocco in July.
Sánchez, leader of the left-wing PSOE party, did not attend the race in Madrid, the new venue of the Spanish Grand Prix.
The Spanish Government said yesterday more than 5300 of the migrants who remained in Ceuta after July’s influx had returned to Morocco in a month, as it faces pressure to restore normality to the increasingly tense city, AFP reported.
The new figures come as criticism over the speed at which the migrants are being returned from the Spanish North African territory damages Sanchez before next year’s election.
Meanwhile, the fan would have had something to cheer about if they were a genuine Lawson supporter as the Kiwi finished in sixth place after starting on the grid in eighth.
Driving for Red Bull, once again replacing injured French driver Isack Hadjar, Lawson earned eight points to take his season tally to 59.
