A Porirua high school has been put in lockdown and closed due to chemical incident.

Mana College said in an urgent announcement on social media that the school was closing immediately after a chemical substance was discovered on site.

“We are clearing the campus in direct coordination with the Police. All students are safe and under full supervision,” the post said.

Students in years 10 and above were being sent home immediately.

Year nines are being held in the school hall to be picked up, or until they had been given permission by parents or caregivers to be sent home.

A Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said crews were assisting police and the Defence Force with the incident, and had 3 fire trucks in attendance.

A police spokeswoman said officers did attend to assist with cordons after reports of discovery of a “concerning chemical” this morning.

“I understand the chemical’s being made safe,” the police spokeswoman said.
