New research reveals how weight-loss drugs could boost employment

New research out of the US indicates weight-loss drugs may help people get a job - and their New Zealand counterparts say this can't be ruled out here.

The paper, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, says women who were unemployed increased their likelihood of securing a job by 26.9 percentage points after a year-and-a-half of taking a GLP-1.

AUT associate professor for planetary health, Julie Trafford, says this could also be linked to confidence, and there could be other factors besides the weight loss.

"We haven't yet, in New Zealand, had the opportunity of Wegovy for long enough to be able to tell that story, because it was only approved by Medsafe for use in New Zealand about a year and a half ago - so unfortunately, we can't know for sure yet."
