Govt rejects calls to ban public fireworks sales despite major public backing

It's thought a better argument's needed to get a fireworks ban across the line.
The Government's quashed a select committee recommendation to ban sales to the public, aimed at protecting animals and free up firefighting resources.
National MP and Committee Deputy Chairperson Greg Fleming told Mike Hosking he was originally against it, but after hearing the submissions, he was in favour of a ban.
He says his colleagues decided with pre-conceived ideas, and he'll try harder to convey the full argument if the Bill returns.
