Treasury's secretary says he knew there'd be a need for change, and now it's about making it happen.

A new report's calling for Treasury to up its game, detailing a litany of blunders, including incorrect ACC deficit numbers, and costings for the Interislander ferry replacements.

The Public Service Commission also finds some ministers are losing confidence in its advice.

Secretary Iain Rennie told Mike Hosking the organisation has been through a tough few years.

He says the leadership team built over the last 12 months can see a new direction and really care about the organisation.

Rennie told Hosking Treasury needs to build some of its core skill sets, particularly in economic policy and commercial areas.

He says it's challenging economic times for governments everywhere, and to make hard choices the best they can, they need really good advice.
