"Host of new challenges": Govt considers extending fuel subsidy amid unstable oil prices

A judgement call's looming from Cabinet on whether it continues temporary fuel support payments. 

Lower income working families have been receiving $50 a week since April, in response to unpredictable fuel prices. 

It was due to be in place for a year or until the price of a litre of 91-octane petrol held below $3 for four weeks – this is being reviewed as the threshold nears. 

Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones told Mike Hosking they're putting a lot of thought into this. 

He says although we've had under $3 prices, the reality is there's still a spike.
