The Wine: Massey Dacta Sauvignon Blanc 2025, Marlborough RRP form $17.99
The taste: A complete classic through and through with a pungent bouquet of fresh pomaceous and citrus fruits, passionfruit and sea spray. A fine lees quality and saline effect are woven into the acid line promoting the flavours that the bouquet suggests, plus lime and makrut leaf. Crisp and salivating with a persistent flavour profile and decent finish.
The food: Sauvignon Blanc is well suited to foods with elevated natural salt content - such as oysters and fresh green-lipped mussels. Salty foods reduce perceptions of acidity making the wine taste fruiter and silkier. That means potato chips n’ dip work as well as feta cheese and salty crackers; however for the drinkers looking for food to match this wine with dinner tonight then I suggest Flounder or John Dory, pan-seared and served with duck-fat potatoes and salty peas.
The vintage: In Marlborough the vintage was excellent overall with most producers happy with fruit-set, ripening and harvest conditions. The tonnage harvested was up too - Sauvignon Blanc accounts for around 89% of the fruit harvested in the region - so there’s a lot riding on its success as a variety for those who like a glass of this wine, and key export destinations.
