'Wake up Auckland': Early-morning ship horn disturbs waterfront
Residents of Auckland’s waterfront were woken by a more than 10-minute-long ship horn this morning.
Ports of Auckland confirmed the horn was activated after there was a safety concern on board a vessel in port.
“Thankfully, it was a false fire alarm, confirmed by the ship master.
“We understand that this may have woken some local residents due to the early alarm and are sorry that the event caused disturbance.”
One person told Newstalk ZB they were woken by the sound around 6.20am.
“The horn continued until shortly after 6.30am, although I have no idea how long it had been sounding before I woke up.”
It consisted of repeated short blasts, each lasting about one to two seconds, with only half a second between them, they said.
Occasionally the sounds would last longer.
A video of the sound posted to Reddit is titled, “Wake up Auckland! Happy Monday people, rise and shine… because the sun isn’t gonna do it for us today!”
A foghorn can be heard sounding off in intervals.
