Sewage pours through Auckland businesses after storm damages pump station

Businesses on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula have been flooded with sewage after a pump station was damaged by heavy rain.

Restaurants have been forced to close in Gulf Harbour to clean up the sewage running through their buildings.

One restaurant owner, who did not want to be named, told the Herald they experienced a similar incident last year and were hoping to reopen as soon as possible.

“They’re going to sanitise all the place, all our restaurants,” the owner said.

“If they say the chemical is working in 24 hours, then we can open tomorrow.

“If they say no, then tomorrow we need to close another day.”

The restaurant owner said Watercare had spoken to their building manager about the incident, but there had been no further communication with the council-controlled organisation.

Other businesses in the area that appear to be affected by the flooding include the Four Square, nail salon and barbershop on Harbour Village Dr.

Clover Nail Salon and Spa posted a picture on Facebook showing its shop floor covered in dirt from the flooding.

The post said the salon would be closed for cleaning.

“We’re so sorry for any inconvenience and really appreciate your understanding.

“We’ll keep you updated and let you know as soon as we’re ready to reopen.

“Thank you for your support and stay safe!”

A resident said some were “something short of furious” about the smell, and they believed some of the sewage might have gone into the canal because their dog was taking more of an interest in it than usual.

However, it did not appear that any homes were affected.

Meanwhile, Watercare posted a statement in a community Facebook group, saying, “Kia ora everyone, last night’s severe localised storm caused flooding at the Hobbs Bay wastewater pump station, damaging pump motors and affecting the station’s ability to move wastewater through the network.

“Temporary pumps are operating and our crews are working to minimise overflows while the flooded area is drained, cleaned and repaired.

“Cleanup work is underway at affected overflow points, and our team is on site to support nearby businesses.

“We apologise for the disruption and thank you for your patience while this urgent repair work is carried out.”
