'It was so wild': Auckland teacher goes viral after onstage dance with Jason Derulo

When Aucklander Mele Taeiloa left her home to go and see Jason Derulo perform in the city, she had no idea she was about to become a viral sensation.

After a video of Taeiloa dancing onstage alongside the music star went viral last night, Taeiloa woke up today to an avalanche of texts and DMs.

“It’s actually crazy,” she told the hosts of Flava this morning.

Taeiloa described the experience as “wild”.

“I actually couldn’t see anything because the lights and the fog machine was, there was so much happening, I didn’t see anyone in the crowd, so I was like, ‘oh, this is a vibe. I can do this’,” she recalled.

The Auckland woman is a dancer and a dance teacher at Manurewa High School and said going on stage was “a little bit pre-planned” but not by much.

One of her friends, who was a dancer on stage, texted her a few minutes earlier, asking if she wanted to go up and dance.

“He just texted me and said, hey, would you like to come up on stage? I was like, no,” she said.

It was her first time hearing that song – Derulo’s Mi Chico – and she only had a few minutes to learn some moves before going up on stage.

“The last part was all freestyle,” she added.

While she does “a little bit of dancing” as she described, this was her “first ever TikTok on stage” and her first time going viral for her moves.

Flava hosts revealed to her that the video has had more than a million views in just a few hours. “The one on Flava, girl, this isn’t even Jason Derulo’s one,” they told her.

She told the radio hosts that she had no idea, as she had just woken up for work.

Asked why she had to go to work given she works at Manurewa High School and it’s the first day of school holidays, she told them she has a second job.

Fans on social media could not get enough of Taeiloa’s moves.

“Nice of her to let Jason Derulo perform at her show,” one person commented.

“Her energy is everything,” another Instagram user said.

“She got her one chance and she made it count,” someone else said.
