A 29-year-old North Shore man has been charged with threatening to kill after allegedly sending a threatening social media message to National MP Dan Bidois.

Waitematā East CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Williams said police began investigating the message in December 2025, after it was allegedly sent the previous month.

The location of the alleged offending is listed as Takapuna.

“Any reports concerning threatening messages are assessed by police and appropriate action taken,” Williams said.

“Ultimately our inquiries have resulted in a 29-year-old North Shore man being charged with threatening to kill.”

The man made his first appearance in the North Shore District Court this week.

If convicted, he could face a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

Williams said police were unable to comment further while the matter was before the court.

Bidois has represented the Northcote electorate since the 2023 election.

He serves as deputy chair of Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Committee and is a member of the Transport and Infrastructure Committee.

It is not the first time that Bidois has been personally targeted during his political career.

During the 2018 Northcote byelection, up to 10 of his campaign billboards were defaced on Anzac Day, an act he described at the time as “disturbing” and “disrespectful”.

He did not respond to requests for comment.
