'Still in shock': Witnesses recall frantic rescue efforts after fatal Auckland crash
Witnesses to a fatal crash at an Auckland shopping centre have described the frantic efforts to try to save the driver in the immediate aftermath.
One person told the Herald he is “still in shock over the sad accident” that took place at the Red Beach shopping centre, on Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast.
Police were called to Red Beach Rd at 12.26pm yesterday after reports of a crash.
Despite medical assistance being provided at the scene, the female driver died.
An employee at Red Beach Kebabs said he heard the “screeching” of a car accelerator before hearing a “big crash” into a column outside the store.
He said he went out after he heard the bang and saw that her car was smoking.
“I opened the door and checked her and she was unconscious. I told someone to get the fire extinguisher.
“I sprayed everywhere. I kept on spraying the engine because I was worried her car would catch on fire.
“I held her hand and said ‘you’ll be all right’ but I don’t think she heard me ...
“The firefighters were incredible they did everything they could. So many people rushed over to help.”
Neighbouring businesses called 111 while he stayed by her side.
He said firefighters arrived just five minutes later.
“They were incredible and tried CPR on her straight away.”
A local woman who also assisted in opening the car door said it was “obvious” the woman had had a medical event.
She said several people including doctors and nurses from a nearby medical centre, as well as from the Lumino dentist, rushed out to help the woman.
“Emergency services were excellent and very quick to respond. I don’t know her personally but have seen her around the Red Beach shops before.”
The crash was being investigated by police.
