A major supplement brand has recalled several creatine products over concerns they may contain an undeclared milk allergen.

NZ Muscle has pulled NZ Muscle Creatine and No Brand Creatine as part of an ongoing New Zealand Food Safety investigation into the company’s products.

New Zealand Food Safety’s acting deputy director-general Mike Inglis said the issue was that the products labels did not warn consumers they may contain milk.

“If you have a milk allergy and have the product at home you can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. If that’s not possible, throw it out.”

The products were available for sale at selected retailers in store and online. The following batches are believed to be affected:

NZ Muscle

  • NZ Muscle Creatine (Unflavoured) (200g) Date mark: B/B JUN27
  • NZ Muscle Creatine (Unflavoured) (500g) Date mark: B/B JUN27
  • NZ Muscle Creatine (Unflavoured) (1kg) Date mark: B/B JUN27

No Brand

  • No Brand Creatine Monohydrate 200g, Date mark: B/B JUN27
  • No Brand Creatine Monohydrate 500g, Date mark: B/B JUN27
  • No Brand Creatine Monohydrate 1kg, Date mark: B/B JUN27

The affected products have been removed from store shelves, but a small quantity was also sent to Australia as personal imports.

New Zealand Food Safety has not been alerted to any allergic reactions associated with the product.

Anyone who has consumed any of the affected batches and is concerned about their health is advised to contact a health professional or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice.

“Food safety officers are investigating NZ Muscle following complaints. Our focus right now is to ensure that consumers are protected and affected product is efficiently removed from the supply chain,” Inglis said.

“As is our usual practice, we will work with the company to understand how the problem occurred and prevent its recurrence. We will also be looking at other allegations made about this business.”

Earlier this week, NZ Muscle removed several key products from sale after finding they had “non-compliant packing”, prompted by a YouTube video that raised concerns about the company’s labelling processes.

Inglis said Food Safety New Zealand is continuing to investigate a number of other social media complaints about the brand.

“As this is an ongoing matter, we are unable to go into detail about this work at this stage,” he said.

“Where we identify issues, we will take necessary action to protect consumers.”
