St Cuthbert's College principal Charlotte Avery began working at the school in 2024 after moving to New Zealand from England.

St Cuthbert’s College principal Charlotte Avery has resigned after less than two years in the role.

Leigh Melville, board chairwoman at the prestigious private school, confirmed to the Herald that Avery resigned following a decision to return to the United Kingdom for “family reasons”.

Melville said she informed staff and parents about the news this morning.

“Charlotte leaves St Cuthbert’s in a strong position, and we are grateful for the leadership and care that she has brought to our school,” Melville said in a statement.

“Her efforts have enabled us to determine a strategic pathway that celebrates St Cuthbert’s success, while protecting our heritage and the values that are important to us.”

Melville said the trust board has started the process to recruit a new principal.

Head of senior school Tom Curtis will lead in the interim with support from head of junior school Fe Tomich “to provide leadership continuity”.

“They will work closely with the college’s senior leadership team to ensure the continued smooth operation of the school.

“The trust board would like to thank Charlotte for her contribution to St Cuthbert’s and wishes her and her family every success for the future.”

Avery joined St Cuthbert’s in August 2024 after 17 years as principal of St Mary’s School in Cambridge, one of the top independent girls’ schools in the UK.
