Motorway chase: Two men arrested after allegedly fleeing in stolen car at 190km/h
Two men have been arrested after allegedly driving dangerously at speeds of 190km/h in a stolen car in South Auckland this morning — with police saying it was a “miracle no one was hurt”.
Police were notified of a stolen vehicle travelling in the Takanini area at around 2.15am.
Tāmaki Makaurau shift commander acting Inspector Dave Readings said, “units spotted the vehicle as it was heading north on Great South Rd and signalled for the driver to stop”, but the vehicle failed to do so and accelerated away.
“The driver was allegedly acting erratically and reaching speeds of up to 120km/h in residential areas.
“Units elected not to pursue, and the vehicle entered the Southern Motorway, where police lost sight.”
The vehicle was then spotted more than eight hours later in Papakura.
Readings said the driver saw police in the area and sped off on to the Southern Motorway.
“The vehicle has exhibited dangerous behaviours, overtaking others and reaching speeds of around 190km/h.
“At several points the vehicle has exited the motorway and performed U-turns to avoid road spikes set up ahead.”
The police Eagle helicopter monitored the vehicle as it exited at Ridge Rd in Bombay where it appeared to take a wrong turn before coming to a stop.
“Police arrived and successfully blocked the vehicle from leaving,” Readings said.
“The two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without issue.”
Readings said it was fortunate the driver did not cause a crash or injure any members of the public.
“This person had no regard for other road users and has created significant risk with their manner of driving.
“It is a miracle no one was hurt or injured.”
Two men, aged 30 and 19, are in police custody, with charges pending.
