Local authorities are appealing for the victim of a mystery dog attack in West Auckland to come forward.

Auckland Council Animal Management officers were alerted to the Thursday afternoon attack in New Lynn after a passing motorist witnessed it and called it in.

Animal Management team leader Clarke Trethowen said the council has limited information because the victim has not yet made contact.

“According to the witness report, the victim was walking on the footpath when a dog rushed out of its property and knocked the victim to the ground,” he said.

“The owner then came out and restrained the dog before containing it inside.”

Animal management officers have seized the dog, which was previously unknown to the council.

It is now being held at a council animal shelter while the investigation continues.

The council is urging the victim, or anyone with information about the attack, to call 0800 462 685 or 09 301 0101.
