Auckland pizza favourite Rosalia’s to close its doors this month
A popular by-the-slice pizza spot in central Auckland will close later this month.
Rosalia’s, the Mt Eden Rd bakery and takeaway known for its Roman-style pizzas (and long lines out the door), confirmed the final day of trade will be June 27.
The owners took to social media to ask customers to visit before it shuts its doors for good next Saturday.
The team behind Rosalia’s also runs the sandwich spot Bodega on Ponsonby Rd, which is being sold.
Co-owner Sean Bone said the team will be pulling out the stops for the shop’s last days by revisiting popular menu items from its past, promising “all our favourite slices, pastries and sandos” with different offerings each day.
“Massive thank you to anyone who has supported us over the years,” Bone said.
The announcement of the closure had been complicated by the owners being locked out of the business’ Instagram account.
They instead asked their followers to share the message “so we can let the good people know our days are limited”.
Co-owner Bryan Anderson told the Herald the timing was right to close.
“Our lease is up next month and with Bodega selling soon we have decided just to close it.”
He said they did not like the terms that came with the new lease and decided it was best to roll their last pizzas now.
“It’s been a labour of love and a hard decision but would rather close it than pass it on,” Anderson said.
On a personal note, Anderson said he had “a big health scare”, which was a shock to the system, and has decided to “get that all sorted out and look after myself then future plans can be hatched!”
He plans to take a break for 12 months or so to travel and reset. Once he is ready, he plans to come home to see where the market is at and what it needs.
The inspiration for Rosalia’s came from the owners’ travels around Italy, visiting the pizza al taglio stores dotted throughout the country.
