'Petrol station legend': Police seek man who pushed burning car away from pump
Police are searching for a man hailed a “petrol station legend” after he sprang into action when a car caught fire next to bowsers.
Emergency services were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the forecourt of a Bombay petrol station on Mill Rd about 12.10pm yesterday.
Police said when they arrived, the vehicle had already been moved away from the pump.
Sergeant Mark Fleming said a CCTV review revealed a good Samaritan was responsible for the brave act.
“The footage shows the unoccupied vehicle well enveloped in smoke and flames when an unknown man approaches it.
“The man very calmly enters the vehicle, releases the handbrake and pushes the vehicle away from the pump while others assist with the fire.
“His brave actions prevented a much more serious situation from eventuating,” Fleming said.
He said, “like all good heroes”, the mystery man left without recognition.
Police said they wanted to contact the man and thank him for his actions.
“Not everyone is able to jump into action in a dangerous situation, and this man deserves to be acknowledged for his courageous quick-thinking,” Fleming said.
The fire was safely put out, and no other damage was reported.
