'I've hidden my cancer pretty well': TVNZ broadcaster reveals breast cancer diagnosis

TVNZ investigative journalist and broadcaster Indira Stewart has revealed she is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with grade three breast cancer. 

In a social media post, Stewart said an aggressive tumour had led to a mastectomy at the age of 41, “but I got a new boob and I LOVE IT”. 

Her raw and honest post has been met with an outpouring of love and support. 

The senior journalist and former Breakfast host - she has been with TVNZ since 2020 and previously worked at RNZ, Coconet TV and the ABC - said January was a “blur”. 

“Did this photo shoot a couple of days before starting chemo. Diagnosed with Grade 3 breast cancer, tumour was aggressive, started chemo two weeks later. 

“Looking at these photos now is like looking at an old friend … I haven’t left home a lot this year but when I have, I’ve hidden my cancer pretty well with false lashes, drawn-on eyebrows and cold capping (a technology that preserved about half my hair volume)." 

She said the post would come as a surprise to some. 

“I haven’t even had a chance to tell many people. There are friends and family who will find out through this post and I know they will understand …" 

Stewart said in the post that treatment had led to early menopause and a mastectomy at 41. “But I got a new boob and I LOVE IT.” 

“I’m still doing chemo, along with other treatment. The journey feels long but I feel lucky and grateful. This is a reminder to get checked fam, get your mammogram if you’re eligible and don’t put it off.” 

Her post has been met with an outpouring of support from friends, family, colleagues and supporters. 

“Watching you traverse this with such grace has been bloody amazing. I adore you Indira ... and your beautiful boobs!” wrote 1News at Six presenter Melissa Stokes. 

“Sending so much love Indira, I’m so sorry you’re going through this x,” wrote Coast radio hosr broadcaster Toni Street. 

“You are truly amazing. Lots of love xxx,” wrote TVNZ broadcaster Laura Tupou.
