One person dies after serious crash on South Island highway
A person has died following a serious crash in the South Island’s Waitaki District.
Police said they were alerted to a single-vehicle crash on Happy Valley Creek Bridge at about 8.10am.
The bridge sits on a section of State Highway 85, known as Dunback-Morrisons Rd, which winds through Shag Valley and up into the Maniototo Plain.
“Sadly, one person was located deceased at the scene,” police said.
“The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducts a scene examination.”
Police earlier indicated the crash was serious, with injuries apparent.
According to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), SH85 has been closed between the townships of Waynes and Kyeburn, where it intersects with SH87.
“Nothbound detour via Macraes Rd, Hyde-Macraes Rd and SH87,” NZTA said.
“Reverse for southbound.”
Motorists are being advised to follow an alternative route and expect delays on their journeys.
