'These companies acted illegally': SA Rugby plans legal action after ticket failure at ABs test
South Africa Rugby plans to take legal action against travel agencies who left fans without tickets for the All Blacks’ second test against the Springboks.
In a statement, the union claimed travel agencies put the blame on them for this failure and will seek “legal redress” as a result.
“In subsequent communication with disappointed clients, claims have been made that the issue lay at the door of SA Rugby,” a statement read.
“This is completely untrue. Agencies sold the promise of tickets they did not have – and could not secure – for the test in breach of the event’s terms and conditions of sale, and without ever having been given access by SA Rugby or its ticketing agency.
“These companies acted illegally and recklessly in pursuit of their own commercial gain at the expense of their clients.
“SA Rugby has turned the matter over to its attorneys.”
About 62,000 people filled Cape Town’s DHL Stadium to watch the Springboks level the series and hand Dave Rennie the first loss of his tenure.
A relentless South Africa applied continuous pressure against an All Blacks side which made plenty of mistakes and lost by seven points.
The two test matches in the series have produced packed crowds, but the games against provincial sides have seen plenty of empty seats.
Fewer than 15,000 people showed up to watch the touring side play the Sharks in Durban in the 52,000 capacity Kings Park Stadium.
Swathes of empty seats were also seen in their fixtures against the Stormers, Bulls and most recently the Lions in Johannesburg.
Plenty of seats are still available for the third test at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg with the cheapest available tickets priced at ZAR1650 ($172.59), while the most expensive tickets still up for grabs can be bought for ZAR4000 ($418.40).
The All Blacks’ next test against South Africa kicks off at 3.10am NZT on September 6 before the two teams head to Baltimore for the fourth and final test match of the tour.
