Several people have been arrested after police responded to a bar fight on Auckland’s Karangahape Rd last night.

Police said they were called to the bar around 12.30am today after reports of fighting inside.

One person was arrested at that time.

A short time later, police were called again after reports of more fighting and bar management advised police they would be closing the bar.

It was estimated that around 500 people were in the bar at the time.

“There was already a significant number of pedestrians in the area around the bar, and additional officers were brought in to manage the crowd as patrons left the bar when it closed,” a police spokesperson said.

Seven people were arrested, however, six of those were subsequently released without charge.

The remaining person was charged with assaulting police.

One witness said they could not reach home due to a heavy police blockade.

One witness said they were unable to reach their home because of the police “blockade.”

They said they were told by police to head towards Ponsonby Rd, despite this being in the opposite direction of their home.

“I explained I lived right there, to which he said, ‘Everybody is going that way ‘, pointing in the opposite direction, towards Ponsonby Rd.

“I repeated that I lived here and just wanted to get home, and he just repeated, ‘Everybody is going that way, go that way’.”
