A serious crash has closed a Bay of Plenty highway this evening.

Police said they were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Te Puke Highway between Bell Rd and Poplar Lane about 7.15pm.

“Indications are that there are critical injuries,” police said.

Emergency services remain at the scene.

Diversions are in place via Pacific Coast Highway at Poplar Lane and Welcome Bay Rd, as well as at Bell Rd on Te Puke Highway.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area, take alternate routes and delay travel if possible.
