Adam Pompey granted early release, will move to Australian club

Warriors centre Adam Pompey has been granted an early release and will move to Australia.

The 28-year-old departs after eight seasons with the club, representing the Warriors 136 times.

“Adam has performed consistently for us since his arrival in 2019,” Warriors general manager of recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden said.

“We appreciate the contribution he has made in his time here and wish him and his family the very best for what lies ahead for them in Australia.”

The club did not confirm which club he was moving to, but reports have suggested he will sign with the Melbourne Storm.

The Herald reported earlier this month Pompey had been given permission to negotiate an early release from the final year of his contract, with him fielding offers from Australia and England’s Super League.

Pompey was listed as a reserve for the Warriors’ finals game at Eden Park against the Newcastle Knights, but he did not play a minute with Leka Halasima taking his spot in the starting line-up.

Pompey’s position was likely to come under threat in 2027 after the Warriors signed versatile back Grant Anderson from the Brisbane Broncos, on top of the current pairing of Ali Leiataua and Halasima – a second-rower turned centre – which appeared to be head coach Andrew Webster’s preferred partnership.

In his nearly 140 appearances for the New Zealand-based club, Pompey scored 288 points from 39 tries and 66 goals.

He made 17 appearances in the 2026 season, scoring five tries and 15 goals and 1896 total running metres.

The Warriors will see other big names depart at the end of this season, including halfback Luke Metcalf who will head to the St George Illawarra Dragons and co-captain Mitch Barnett who departs for the Brisbane Broncos on a three-year deal.

Two roster spots remain open for the Warriors heading into next season.
